 A few months ago Terrapan Labs flew LOUIS over a stretch of coast in Del Mar, California, providing support to USGS and the Scripps Institute of Oceanography to monitor coastal erosion. Through a collaboration with EnsoMOSAIC, a 3D terrain model of the Del Mar coast was generated from the collected image set.
The high spatial resolution and redundancy of data collected from LOUIS allowed the automated generation of a high resolution 3D model with minimal human intervention. The derivation of 3D terrain models from a flexible platform like LOUIS shows great promise for applications where repeated terrain surveys are needed, like erosion mapping, tree canopy characterization, or subsidence monitoring.
